The Internet Infrastructure Coalition's (i2Coalition) VPN Trust Initiative (VTI) has announced its core principles for secure VPN (virtual private network) technologies, focusing on five areas: security; privacy; advertising practices; disclosure and transparency; and social responsibility.
Regarding security, the principles call for the use of strong encryption and authentication protocols; the prompt suspension, revocation, or destruction of tokens related to a compromised account; and proactive measures to detect problems.
With respect to privacy, they call for, among other things, explaining practices regarding the maintenance and retention of connection logs; keeping only data necessary to maintain service and being transparent on the circumstances under which data is provided to law enforcement; ensuring private keys are not shared; clearly describing limits on anonymizing features; and allowing users to be...
