Eça De Queirós Auf Der 'Insel Der Seligen": Das Werk Des Portugiesischen Romanciers Im Ostberliner Aufbau- Verlag

Abstract

Wie erklärt es sich, dass Eça de Queirós – Realist, Meister der Ironie, Erneuerer der literarischen Sprache und wohl bedeutendster portugiesischer Schriftsteller des 19. Jahrhunderts – in Deutschland ausgerechnet durch den Ostberliner Aufbau-Verlag die bislang einzige systematische Publikation seines Romanwerks erfuhr?

In vorliegender Arbeit wird vor dem Hintergrund des staatlich gelenkten Literaturbetriebs der DDR, der Verlagsgeschichte und der Arbeitsbedingungen von Lektoren und Übersetzern multiperspektivisch dem kulturpolitischen und editorischen Kontext dieser Publikationen nachgegangen, um anschließend zu untersuchen, ob sich diese Faktoren bzw. etwaige ideologisch begründete Vorgaben neben der Werkauswahl auch in der translatorischen Feinarbeit widerspiegeln. Dazu werden ausgewählte, unter Ägide des Aufbau-Verlags veröffentlichte Übersetzungen der Romane von Eça de Queirós analysiert (O Conde d’Abranhos und drei deutschsprachige Fassungen des Romans A Relíquia), wobei besonderes Augenmerk der Frage gilt, wie die Übersetzer mit Eças elaborierten Stilmitteln umgegangen sind und ob die Nachbildung derselben im Kontext der ostdeutschen Kulturpolitik Übersetzern und Verlagsmitarbeitern ein Anliegen war.

Ein interdisziplinäres Vorgehen greift zwecks Beleuchtung der Publikationshintergründe auf Erkenntnisse verschiedener Fachgebiete zurück. Ausgehend von der Polysystemtheorie (Toury, Even-Zohar), ergänzt durch Erkenntnisse des Göttinger Sonderforschungsbereichs Die literarische Übersetzung werden Ausgangs- und Zieltexte in ihren Entstehungskontexten ergründet und unter Berücksichtigung stilistischer, linguistischer und translatorischer Herangehensweisen hermeneutisch analysiert. Ein mehrmethodisches Vorgehen gründet sich neben der Auswertung von Primär- und Fachliteratur sowie Archivalien auch auf die Befragung von Zeitzeugen.

Die Rechercheergebnisse zu den kulturpolitischen und vertraglichen Rahmenbedingungen erweisen eine von Vorgaben unbehelligte Arbeitsweise der ostdeutschen Literaturübersetzer, wenn auch unterschwellig und punktuell eine ideologisch bedingte Einflussnahme, ausgelöst etwa durch den Formalismusstreit oder das 11. Plenum des ZK, ihre Spuren in der stilistischen Feingestaltung der Übersetzungen hinterlassen haben kann. Unter philologischen Aspekten dokumentiert die Übersetzungsanalyse jedoch seitens der involvierten Akteure des Aufbau-Verlags einen exemplarisch sorgfältigen Umgang mit den Texten, was umso mehr Beachtung verdient, als die parallel in der Bundesrepublik sporadisch veröffentlichten Übersetzungen der Werke Eças teils erhebliche philologische Schwächen aufweisen.

Como se explica que até à data Eça de Queirós – realista, mestre da ironia, renovador da linguagem literária e certamente o mais importante escritor português do séc. XIX – deva à editora Aufbau da ex-RDA a única publicação sistemática da sua obra em língua alemã?

O presente trabalho pretende analisar, numa abordagem multiperspetívica, o contexto sócio-político, cultural e editorial destas publicações, sobre o pano de fundo do controle estatal da produção literária na Alemanha socialista, da história da editora Aufbau e das condições de trabalho de leitores e tradutores, para averiguar, em seguida, se estes fatores ou até eventuais diretivas de cariz ideológico se espelham na seleção das obras e também nos matizes tradutivos. Para tal, analisaram-se traduções selecionadas de romances de Eça de Queirós, publicadas pela editora Aufbau (O Conde d’Abranhos assim como três versões de A Relíquia), merecendo especial atenção a forma como os tradutores lidaram com os meios estilísticos queirosianos, e se a recriação dos mesmos constituiu uma preocupação dos tradutores e colaboradores da editora

A análise interdisciplinar das circunstâncias de publicação parte dos pressupostos da Teoria dos polissistemas (Toury, Even-Zohar), complementados pelas constatações do projeto de pesquisa A tradução literária, da Universidade de Göttingen, explora os contextos de produção dos textos de partida e de chegada, e procede a uma análise hermenêutica dos mesmos, numa perspetiva estilística, linguística e tradutológica. A metodologia combinada baseia-se na análise de literatura primária e especializada, e em materiais de arquivo, mas também na inquirição de testemunhas epocais.

Os resultados da investigação sobre as condicionantes político-culturais e contratuais revelam a liberdade dos tradutores nas suas opções, embora uma influência ideológica, ainda que pontual e subtil, motivada, por ex., pela querela formalista ou pelo 11º plenário do Comité central, possa ter deixado marcas na concretização estilística das traduções. Regista-se, contudo, um tratamento exemplarmente escrupuloso dos textos por parte dos agentes da editora Aufbau, o que é tanto mais notável quanto as escassas traduções das obras de Eça, publicadas esporadicamente no mesmo período, na República Federal da Alemanha, apresentam, em parte, substanciais deficiências do ponto de vista filológico.

How can it be explained that the only systematic German translation to-date of the novels by Eça de Queirós was published by the East Berlin Aufbau-Verlag? Eça was not only the most important Portuguese realistic writer, but probably the greatest of the nineteenth century - a master of irony, and an innovator of literary language.

In the present dissertation, the cultural, political and editorial contexts of these publications are analysed within the framework of a multi-perspective approach: this is done in order to investigate whether certain factors (government-controlled literature production of the GDR, the history of the Aufbau publishing house and the working conditions of editors and translators or even ideologically based prescriptions) are reflected not only in the selection of the texts to be published but also in the translational stylistic precision work. To this end, selected translations of two of Eça de Queirós’ novels (O Conde d'Abranhos and three German versions of the novel A Relíquia), which were published under the aegis of the Aufbau-Verlag, will be analysed: particular attention is paid to the question of how the translators handled Eca’s elaborate stylistic techniques and whether the recreation of his style was a matter of concern to translators and publishing staff.

An interdisciplinary approach is used to clarify the background of these publications: using the Polysystem theory (Toury, Even-Zohar) as a starting point (supplemented by the findings of the Göttingen special research project on literary translation), source and target texts are explored in their contexts of conception and analysed hermeneutically using stylistic, linguistic and translational methods. A multi-method approach is based not only on the evaluation of primary and specialized literature and archival documents, but also on the questioning of contemporary witnesses.

The research results on the political, cultural and contractual frameworks reveal that when East German literary translators were working, they were undisturbed by the interference of any requirements, although an ideological influence, triggered, for example, by the Formalism debate or the 11^th Plenum of the Central Committee, may have left its traces in the stylistic refinement of the translations. From a philological point of view, however, the analysis of the translations proves that the Aufbau-Verlag handled the texts in a careful, indeed exemplary, way: this deserves all the more attention since some of the sporadically published translations of Eca’s texts in the Federal Republic of Germany during the same period have considerable philological weaknesses.
