El objetivo más general de este trabajo es comprobar si existe un tipo de héroe que pueda considerarse gauchesco, y hacerlo fundamentadamente. Por esto último entiendo el proceder de acuerdo con un marco teórico o, por lo menos, conceptual previamente definido, y en diálogo con la bibliografía crítica de cada una de las obras estudiadas, en la medida en que la afinidad con el tema lo permita. Propósitos más específicos son: observar lo que parece ser la formación de esa entidad literaria, en Facundo; notar sus posibles cambios en Martín Fierro y en Juan Moreira, y deducir sus rasgos, tanto los más estables como los propios de cada uno de los personajes analizados.

Todos estos objetivos hacen que este trabajo otorgue un peso considerable al lado descriptivo de la cuestión. Definir un tipo de héroe, como aquí se intenta, es en buena medida explicar cómo es, cuáles son los componentes que lo identifican; y explicar por qué tal o cual personaje se ajusta, y cómo, a un concepto determinado de heroísmo es también caracterizarlo desde ese punto de vista.

The most general objective of this work is to verify if there is a type of hero that can be considered gaucho, and to do so with reason. By the latter I mean proceeding in accordance with a previously defined theoretical or, at least, conceptual framework, and in dialogue with the critical bibliography of each of the works studied, to the extent that the affinity with the subject allows.
