ESPN is making sporting use of Bill Murray, insouciant comedy star and celebrated dancer of the Pebble Beach Sand Trap Tango. Murray discussed golf and baseball Sunday night on SportsCenter, but more important he will be a presenter and performer tonight for the cable network's first ESPY Awards for excellence in athletic performance.
Thirty-three awards voted upon by fans will be handed out by such diverse stars as Dustin Hoffman, Mariel Hemingway and Tim McCarver. Dennis Miller will be the host for the show, which airs from 9 to 11:30 p.m. on ESPN.
Murray, currently starring in Groundhog Day, spent time during a brief break from the elongated chat unscrewing the cable connections behind two of the televisions in a six-set bank in the office's lobby and ordering two people waiting for appointments to get him coffee.
The actor's antics masked a worry: His ESPY performance is, tentatively, a dance number...
