Historic boat porridge making a comeback
Tingzaizhou, or boat porridge, has become popular again in the Pearl River area near Guangzhou's Huangpu Port.
Boats that sell tingzaizhou are reported to currently enjoy brisk business, with clients queuing up for the famous local snack every evening.
Tingzaizhou consists of pork, fish, shrimp, fried peanuts, a deep- fried twisted dough stick and scallion. The snack has a very long history and is historically quite popular in the southern Chinese region.
In older times, fishermen went out in the daytime, made the tingzaizhou in the evening to accompany their catch, and paddled their boats along the Pearl River to sell their porridge hence the name "boat porridge."
Now, tingzaizhou is probably also made on shore.
