On September 6, the “duck and rice capital of the world” lost its daily newspaper … or so it thought. After 134 years, the Stuttgart Daily Leader in Stuttgart, Ark., published its final edition.
The presses rolled for what GateHouse Media believed would be the final time after announcing August 29 the daily newspaper would be shuttered. Yet, right up to press deadline, staffers noted that “multiple parties have come forward” expressing interest in purchasing the publication. Confidence was strong that a deal would be reached.
A purchase has indeed happened. Thank the FCC for making this newspaper’s forthcoming resurrection possible, as the removal of its cross-ownership media ban has made it happen.
In an announcement distributed early Tuesday (9/17), East Arkansas Broadcasters (EAB) — the radio broadcasting company owned by Bobby Caldwell — has purchased the Daily Leader from GateHouse Media for an undisclosed price.
