IBM Corp.'s Power Personal Systems Division, which is having trouble taking on Intel Corp. with PowerPC-based systems, is about to be folded into The IBM PC Co., sources said last week.
IBM would not comment, but sources said the move is under consideration and likely will take place in the next several weeks.
The restructuring does not mean IBM is reducing its commitment to the PowerPC architecture, insiders said. Instead, they said the changes will reduce rivalry between the two outfits and result in some operating efficiencies.
"Now we won't have two different marketing people trying to market systems to the same customer," said one IBM insider. "We'll have one integrated marketing force that can handle both."
