* IBM was back and running in the U.S. computer services market after being sidelined for nearly a decade. Under terms of the 1973 anti-trust settlement with Control Data Corp., IBM was barred from renting computer time to customers until 1979. It decided to establish a U.S.-wide data network to facilitate the transmission, processing and sharing of information between parties via phone lines to major centres from a central computer in Florida.
