This commentary on the Song of Songs was written by Rabbi Shefa Gold, a member of the Jewish Renewal movement, and graced by the imaginative illustrations of local artist Phillip Ratner.
Beyond those facts - and mat the rabbi will discuss her book at the Dennis and Phillip Ratner Museum on Saturday evening -I am mostly full of questions, not answers, after reading it.
My confusion begins with the Song of Songs itself. Why was this erotic poem included in our Bible? Is it to teach us of the importance of love in daily Ufe? Is the Song of Songs, as some of our sages believed, not simply about physical love between people, but an allegory about the love of God for his "wife" Israel?
