When it began marketing strength-training equipment to fitness clubs roughly 10 years ago, Cybex soon overpowered the competition--the then-No. Nautilus.
Now the Bay Shore, L.I., company plans to muscle in on the leading stationary-bike maker, Life Fitness Inc., for a chunk of the cardiovascular market.
Cybex's first cardiovasculaa entry is dubbed simply the Bike. Sleek and modern in design, it provides a stark visual contrast to the market leader, the Lifecycle machine made by Irvine, Calif.-based Life Fitness. Cybex admits aesthetics were an important part of the product's development, but says it is advanced technology that sets the Bike apart from Lifecycle.
The New York market is crucial to the Bike's success, says a Cybex spokesman. On-site corporate health facilities and high-end fitness clubs, such as Plus One Fitness Center, World Gym and the Vertical Club, demand the best and latest in exercise equipment. Like several cities on the West Coast, sales here are usually a bellwether for the national and international markets.
