Kreesha Turner's first CD reflects her commitment to music
Blame it on "Oh Canada." Singing our national anthem may be an unlikely launching pad for Canada's newest R&B pop star, but that's what happened to Kreesha Turner. Born and raised in Edmonton, she reports that her Jamaicanborn motfier encouraged her to spend a year in Jamaica when Turner was 15. "Jamaican culture is so musical, and my friends there applied peer pressure to join the church choir," she says. "I went, ? don't sing,' but 1 went to the audition. 1 had no idea what to sing, and they said, 'Sing your national anihem. We don't know it.'"
She got in, of course, and singing in the Pentecostal choir sparked a passion for singing that still bums bright. "That audience was the liveliest around. To get their kind of extreme reaction from the music I was creating was inspiring."
