1. Introduction
A reader of the Dutch quality newspaper NRC Handelsblad, who deeply regretted the retirement of its columnist J. L. Heldring, published the following comment on the newspaper’s website (bold is ours; throughout the article, we put the finite verb with singular or plural agreement in this construction in boldface):1
