Old team name: Cossacks
New team name: Seawolves
Critics say: The Russian Cossacks, who have been blamed for massacring Jews, represent anti-Semitism, violence, and murder.
What's happening: Sonoma State changed the name even though the president, Ruben Arminana, had said the institution would not and even though some groups, including ethnic Cossacks in the United States, had defended the university's 40-year-old symbol. The new name alludes to The Sea Wolf, a 1904 novel by Jack London, who grew up and lived in the area.
