On March 19, 2003, the Federal government tabled a detailed Notice of Ways and Means Motion in legislature to implement certain provisions of Budget 2003. One of the provisions is the creation of a six-week compassionate family care leave benefit under the Employment Insurance (EI) Act. This special EI benefit is to provide income support and job protection to employees who take time off work to care for gravely ill family members.
When Bill C-28, An Act to implement certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on February 18, 2003, is enacted, the compassionate family leave (EI) benefit will come into force January 4, 2004. Individuals who meet the eligibility requirements for EI compassionate family care leave benefit, and have served the two-week waiting period, will be entitled to:
- Six-weeks of EI benefits during a period of 26 weeks beginning the first day of the week that a medical doctor has issued a certificate stating that a family member of the claimant has a serious medical condition with a significant...
