Mixed reality, augmented reality, and virtual reality are increasingly being incorporated in education, including in online and blended education settings. However, very often, these terms are used interchangeably as if they mean the same thing. EDUCAUSE (2017) noted that their definitions "are in flux, in part because the technology is evolving rapidly" (p. 1). Although this is certainly true, and it will likely be the case as new technologies and tools are developed, there are, indeed, similarities and differences. Tokareva (2018) provided a short definition of each term and Figure 1 is an illustration of these three terms.
* "Virtual reality (VR) immerses users in a fully artificial digital environment.
* Augmented reality (AR) overlays virtual objects on the real-world environment.
* Mixed reality (MR) not just overlays but anchors virtual objects to the real world" (para. 1).
