Pret A Manger, the UK-based sandwich restaurant chain, has started a Japanese subsidiary and plans to open its first Japan shop in Tokyo this autumn. Pret shops, which number about 120 worldwide, market themselves on freshness and quality. No preservatives or genetically modified foods are used, and Pret A Manger uses eggs from free-range chickens. Customers help themselves to their choice of sandwich from the shelves. Also available are sandwiches on baguettes, salads, sushi and a variety of hot and cold drinks. Dine- in seating is available. Pret A Manger helps to assure quality by sending mystery shoppers to its stores to rate service. Staff members get a bonus every time their shop meets a predetermined score.
