Rite Aid Corp. is upping the ante in the Detroit drugstore wars, just as rival Arbor Drugs Inc. adjusts to its acquisition.
Rite Aid plans to open 10 drugstores in Detroit this year alone, a $35 million proposition, said Paul Toombs, the chain's Detroit area market manager.
The first of the stores is to open at 10950 Gratiot on June 11 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Rite Aid Chairman and CEO Martin Grass and Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer.
Camp Hill, Pa.-based Rite Aid also win remodel five stores in the city at a cost of $3.5 million.
Rite Aid already is Detroit's largest chain retailer in terms of locations, with 24 stores in the city. Arbor, now part of Woonsocket,...
