/\ Ahlberg, Allan A Bit More Bert 32 pp. Farrar ISBN 0-374-32489-1 16.00
(1) Illustrated by Raymond Briggs. Bert is back, with six more chapters detailing his hapless but oddly satisfying adventures. Ahlberg metaphorically grabs us by the lapels and hauls us into the book: in the funniest and most subversive example, he orders us to give Bert a haircut that quickly turns into a disaster ("Careful ... not too much. Oh no!"). Briggs's illustrations are sublime, with Bert evoked in all his cherry-nosed, red-haired affability. Review 9/02. MVP
Alakija, Polly Catch That Goat! 32 pp. Barefoot ISBN 1-84148-908-5 16.99
(3) Ayoka chases her runaway goat through a crowded, colorful African marketplace. She questions many merchants; none has seen the pesky fugitive, but it has stolen something from each one. Readers can count down the pilfered items from ten to one as they follow the goat's trail. Like the text, the illustrations encourage page-turning; the goat can often be spotted disappearing off the righthand page. MFS
Andreae, Giles There's a House inside My Mommy 32 pp. Whitman ISBN 0-8075-7853-3 15.95
(4) Illustrated by Vanessa Cabban. In a rhyming text, Andreae explains that babies grow inside their moms, but he limits the information to a few simple facts: during pregnancy, moms grow larger, get hungry, feel sick, and are sleepy. Cheerful illustrations with rounded, smooth shapes and friendly, warm colors are more engaging than the slight text and contribute to the comfortable tone of the book. MVK
Anglund, Joan Walsh Little Angel's Book of Christmas 32 pp. Simon ISBN 0-689-85359-9 9.95
(5) New ed. (1997). Originally published in paperback, this extended greeting card expresses hackneyed sentiments of the season, such as "love is always the best gift." As is typical of Anglund's gift books, a page of verse faces an illustration of her trademark rosy-cheeked characters, featureless but for their black-dot eyes. MVK
Anholt, Laurence Chimp and Zee and the Big Storm 32 pp. Fogelman ISBN 0-8037-2700-3 16.99
(3) Illustrated by Catherine Anholt. One stormy day, as tempestuous ape twins Chimp and Zee are trying to fold a sheet outdoors, a gust of wind carries them away. After a lengthy flight above Jungletown, they are rescued by their parents. With illustrations featuring bright images pasted onto...
