Lords have voted against an amendment to the EU (Withdrawal) Bill that sought to recognise animal sentience in legislation.
Amendment 40 was introduced to the House of Lords by crossbench peer Lord Trees (pictured) last week. It sought to embed the principles of Article 13 of the EU's Lisbon Treaty - which recognises animal sentience - within the withdrawal Bill, and to add more specificity to the Bill, making it clear how the government would be held to account and to clearly define the term 'animal'.
