Carlton Deal With Universal
Hollywood studio Universal cut a deal that will see two Universal channels air on the Carlton Communications-operated DTT system On Digital (nee Bristish Digital Broadcasting). One channel is expected to be Studio Universal, using films from both Universal and Carlton libraries. Universal also plans to unveil its successful 13th Street channel on the system. The two channels are expected to be part of the digital terrestrial's basic service (which will cost about Pounds 10 per month).
Canadian/Dutch Co-Prod Rolls
Canadian children's producer Norma Denys and Denmark's Egmont Imagination have begun work on a Pounds 2 million co-production dubbed "St. Bear's Dolls Hospital" (52 x 15-min) - a union the series' sales agent Winchester Television has breathlessly termed "the world's first Candian/Danish co-production." Winchester and Egmont are handling the international sales, publishing and product licensing for the puppet series. Shooting is scheduled to end Sept. 18, and the series will be screened at MIPCOM.
Landscape's Grabs Polish Carriage
The Landscape Channel reached an agreement with the Polish Cable Television Association, which will see the channel broadcast to 11,000 homes on the Rzeszowska Cable Network starting Aug. 1. Landscape, which celebrates its tenth anniversary in October, also broadcasts in France, Spain, Germany, Denmark, Latvia, India and Britain.
Cinar Works in 'Sci Squad'
Canadian children's production/distribution company Cinar Films is to produce "Sci Squad" (13 x 30-min), a live-action series produced in conjunction with PBS' Seattle affiliate KCTS - best known for producing "Bill Nye the Science Guy" and "Quest." Production on the new series started July 13 and is slated to continue through October. The series is scheduled to air on TVOntario (Canada) and during the Discovery Kids block on the Discovery Channel in the U.S., starting in 1999. Cinar holds the series' international distribution rights. Additional funding for the series is provided by the National Science Foundation, Informal Science Education Program.
'Stressed Eric' Gets U.S. Distribution
British distributor ITEL sold Britain's answer to "The Simpsons" and "King of the Hill" to U.S. broadcast network NBC.
