Except that both volumes concern field artillery, Bruce Gudmundsson's On Artillery and Boyd Dastrup's source book have little in common, but they both differ from most books published on the history of artillery, the majority of which have focussed on the weapons themselves or have recounted battle actions in which artillery played a prominent role. On Artillery concentrates on the development of French and German field artillery doctrine and tactics since the Franco-Prussian War. Since its main emphasis (four of ten chapters) is on World War I, the book complements the author's Stormtroop Tactics: Innovation in the German Army, 1914-1918 (New York: Praeger, 1989).
