Colin Gray is justifiably the most distinguished writer on strategy in the Anglophone world and his new book appears to a background of much praise, some of it summarised on the back cover. As with aU works on strategy, Gray's is on the uneasy border between long-term analysis and short-term prospectus, between reflection and engagement, and between the perspective of the state on which he focuses, the USA, and the wider international system.
