In July of 1998 the nightly news brought us images of the violent clashes at Drumcree in Northern Ireland between the Orange Order, who were intent on carrying out a march through a Catholic neighborhood in Portadown, and British troops who were sent to uphold a ban on this march. Because the Orange Order's annual marches commemorate the victory of King William III (who also held the title of the Prince of Orange) over the Catholic forces of King James II at the Battle of the Boyne in July of 1690 (thus the point of marching through Catholic communities), the significance of the Williamite War for the current Troubles in Northern Ireland is immediately apparent.
