The Midnight Zoo offers a mystical Halloween experience that draws more on fantasy than fear. A creation of Brookline's Puppet Showplace Theater in partnership with the Franklin Park Zoo, The Midnight Zoo is an immersive 20-minute moonlit trail walk featuring 17 otherworldly creatures and their caretakers.
As families waited in line to enter, cast members of The Midnight Zoo enchanted children with glimpses of what was to come. An actress named Dame Huxby introduced a circle of giggling toddlers to "Wehiggoff," an orange-eyed purple baby reptile hiding in a basket.
The quest through an unused part of the zoo began with a gatekeeper who dramatically unveiled an empty cage. "Oh no, she is gone!" he shouted as the crowd learned that the Kawlish Bloodbeast had escaped The Midnight Zoo. Once inside, visitors became initiated as "guardians" of all the creatures in a zoo that Lord Midnight oversees.
Creatures along the trail included a two-headed kekru described as a ferocious, wild and arrogant bird, sharp-toothed gloom blooms flowers that magically bounced up and down and a fluorescent violet dinosaur that hovered above the crowd.
