Abstract
This article attempts to rebut the mythical image of the 19th-century history of law, according to which the Peace of Westfalia of 1648 was the starting point for international public law in the post-enlightenment epoch. Instead of defending that thesis, the article shows how the Peace of Westfalia was still based on legal and political structures from ancient European Christendom, which existed during the millennium between the coronation of Charlemagne in 800 and its fall during the French Revolution of 1789 and the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, respectively.
