Abstract
This capstone project will identify and evaluate vulnerabilities to critical infrastructure systems as it relates to cyber terrorism. This research begins with defining what terrorism is, how terrorism differs from cyber terrorism and how technology can impact the effects of terrorism. Cyber terrorism threatens more than just one or two areas of the critical infrastructure; it affects all computer systems that manage our critical infrastructure from the power grid, water and oil facilities to transportation and public safety sectors. There is a need to explore the best practices to secure these networks and the need for multi-agency cooperation. The lack of a clear definition of what cyber terrorism is, as well as the open boundaries of the Internet present problems of attempting to deal with this issue on a legal basis. Advancements in technology is making the use of software and hardware easier, requiring less sophistication on the part of the user. Cyber terrorism has become the leading concern for many government officials in recent years.
