Every time I open one of the books in this two volume desktop reference set, it's like opening a treasure chest full of wonderful jewels: graphs, tables, pictures, equations, and well-written narrative describing soil science and its various disciplines. The Handbook of Soil Sciences has been updated and expanded from the first edition (2000) by a second volume and several additional chapters. This is not an introductory level text - it is a thorough, dense (both in content and bulk - it's heavy) compilation of the familiar themes of soil science related mostly to agriculture and somewhat incidentally to natural ecosystems and non-agricultural environments.
