Tim Clue keeps "leaving Iowa," and no matter how far he wanders, he keeps coming back.
"Leaving Iowa" is actually a comedy by Clue and his writing partner, Spike Manton, that is running in previews at the Royal George Theatre in Chicago ahead of its opening May 13.
The show is based on Clue's memories growing up in the '70s.
"Leaving Iowa," you may remember, had an extended run last summer at the Theatre Building Chicago. Before that, it was produced in 2004 at the Purple Rose Theatre Company in Chelsea, Mich. And before that it was produced by a small Naperville company, Shadowfax Theater, that no longer exists.
At each stage, Clue and Manton have worked on the play, shaping and reshaping it. Clue is quick to say that he has liked every incarnation of the play, but every time he works on it, he sees ways to improve it.
"This time," he said, referring to the current production at the Royal George, "we are focusing on the music in the show."
