The Charles Goodyear Award, which was established in 1941, perpetuates the memory of Charles Goodyear, the inventor of rubber vulcanization. It is recognized as the most prestigious award in rubber technology. The award honors an individual for any outstanding invention, innovation, or development which has resulted in a significant change in, or contribution to, the rubber industry. The 2001 Charles Goodyear Medalist is Dr. Yasuyuki Tanaka. The award was presented to Dr. Tanaka at the Rubber Division meeting in Providence, Rhode Island, on April 25, 2001
Dr. Tanaka has been engaged in the structural characterization of elastomers and synthesis of copolymers ever since taking graduate courses at Osaka University where he received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry. Dr. Tanaka joined the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology in 1973, after he worked at the Japan Synthetic Rubber Co. for twelve years. He is now a professor at the Division of...
