Premadasa Warns on Interfering.
As the five-week-old war between the Sri Lankan government and Tamil separatists assumed a more ruthless character last week, President Ranasinghe Premadasa once again changed his track y declaring that no country would be allowed to interfere in Sri Lanka.
Only a week ago Premadasa had sought international mediation without directly naming any particular country. However, Premadasa was quoted as saying in south-central Ratnapura town last week that the problem did not concern India and was a matter "that has to be resolved by the government of Sri Lanka without external interference."
Premadasa's remarks came only days after he had stated that any resumption of peace talks with the Liberation Tigers could only take place with the involvement of the international community "in a way acceptable to us."
The statement had come in for criticism from both Tamil and Sinhala parties and organizations.
Subsequently, he modified his stand to say that though his government believed in building a healthy relationship with the outside world, no country would be permitted to "meddle" in the island's internal affairs.
He accused the LTTE of making "concerted attempts" to bring India into the picture.
