S. Carolina school district accused of bias
WASHINGTON The Justice Department has accused a South Carolina school district of dismissing, reassigning and demoting black faculty and staff members in violation of a 1969 court order.
Attorney General John Mitchell said that a motion for supplemental relief had been filed against the Chesterfield County School District in U.S. District Court in Columbia, S.C.
The motion, which asked for an expedited hearing, said the district discriminatorily terminated the employment of black professional staff members at the end of the 1969-70 school year.
It said the district also discriminatorily reassigned and demoted black faculty members for the 1970-71 school year and followed discriminatory practices in recruiting and hiring new teachers.
Davis lawyer kicked by Magee
SAN RAFAEL Angela Davis' co-defendant, Ruchell Magee, kicked and spat on his attorney recently and called the new judge in the case "a Ku Klux Klan man in disguise."
Magee was eventually taken out of the courtroom in chains.
Despite Magee's outbursts, arguments finally began after months of delay on a series of 10 pre-trial motions by Miss Davis' attorneys.
Shortly after the Judge Richard E. Arnason -- the sixth judge in the case -- opened the hearing, Magee, although chained to his chair, raised his legs and kicked Ernest W. Graves, his court-appointed lawyer, on the shoulder and face with such force...
