Scared of kidnap for ransom: Wealthy Chinese-Filipinos send kids to China schools
Wealthy Chinese-Filipino families are sending their children to schools here in a serious - and expensive - effort to avoid risks that they may be kidnapped for ransom in the Philippines.
Dr. Li Yi Ping, director of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies of the Xiamen University, made this disclosure in noting the upsurge in enrollment of Chinese-Filipino students in schools in this city.
Li told Manila-based reporters in an interview at the university campus that Chinese-Filipinos sent their children to study here during periods when kidnap-for-ransom cases were reported on the rise.
"Once the situation (in Manila) improves, they return (there)," Li said.
