SYNAGOGUE
A plan to make a landmark synagogue accessible to the disabled has run into opposition from groups who want the 128-year-old building's exterior unchanged.
An architect for the Brotherhood Synagogue on Gramercy Place met last week to discuss a renovation plan with representatives of preservation groups, who will now offer their own recommendations.
The synagogue is applying to the city Landmarks Preservation Commission for permission to build an elevator outside the building, which was built in 1859 as a Quaker meeting house.
