The Philippine treasury and its national bank paid almost $16 million to cover withdrawals made by Imelda Marcos' secretary over a seven-year period from what prosecutors dubbed Marcos' "personal piggy bank," according to testimony yesterday.
Testifying in Marcos' trial at federal court in Manhattan, a senior vice president of the Philippine National Bank said the national treasury footed the bill for $6 million of the $16 million Marcos' secretary withdrew from the bank's New York branch between 1976 and 1983.Another $9.8 million was "deducted from the profits of the bank," Julius Campo told the jury.
