What happened?

The following ProQuest error:"Error 1011 ProQuest has attempted to give you access through a variety of methods but has been unable to authenticate you. " will display when you attempt to access ProQuest and the ProQuest authentication system is unable to recognize you. This is the most common error which occurs when attempting to access ProQuest.

What does this mean?

If you are a student or library patron, this error is common and should not alarm you. Most often, this error occurs because you are attempting access ProQuest from home or work or someplace other than your library, campus, or institution. Please check with your library reference desk, your institutional help desk, or your offsite support services to inquire if there are instructions or login information for connecting remotely to ProQuest. At many institutions, they may be able to help you set up a connection to ProQuest through a proxy server, through a web page link, or through the use of an account name and password.

What should I do?

If you believe you already have the proper access information from your library and you are receiving this error message and are unable to connect, please review the following information:

  • If you are connecting through a proxy server, make certain that you have logged on to that proxy server and that it is properly configured in your web browser settings.
  • If you are connecting through a Virtual Private Network (VPN) system or application, make certain that you have activated that software and logged into your VPN on the computer you are using.
  • If you are connecting through a link from your library, make certain that you have logged on to your library's web site or OPAC to insure that you are authenticated to them.
  • If you are attempting to access ProQuest with a username and password, you may want to access ProQuest through this page. If you are in the UK or if you know that you are using an Athens username and password, you may want to access ProQuest through this page.

If you do not know what any of the above terms mean, you should contact your library reference desk, your institutional help desk, or your offsite support services for assistance

If you believe you have properly configured you computer for access and have accurate access information from your library and you are still unable to connect, you may also wish to review the following:

  • Check your computer and web browser settings.  To ensure you will be able to successfully access ProQuest products, please click on our Browser Health Check.

Unfortunately, because every library is set up differently, ProQuest Support cannot provide authentication assistance or information to end-users.

Library Administrator Instructions

If you are a Library Administrator, this error indicates a failure to authenticate via the ProQuest cascading authentication mechanism. This means that the ProQuest web client has attempted a number of methods to authenticate the accessing browser and a number of them have failed. This can be caused by a number of scenarios, such as the following common ones:

  • A user is attempting to access ProQuest remotely and has not set up a proxy server for their session or in their browser. This is very common. If your library uses a proxy server such as EZProxy to authenticate, please make certain that the user attempting to access ProQuest has authenticated to the proxy server and has made any configuration changes necessary to use your proxy server.
  • IP authentication has not been set up correctly for your network. Please make certain the computer attempting to access ProQuest is on an IP in the range set up for your account.
  • A Referring URL link authentication is not set up correctly. If your library is using Referring URL for authentication to ProQuest, make certain that your referring URLs are structured properly and are recorded as authorized URLs in your account setup. Also make certain that the user's computer is not using any internet security tools which might be blocking the Referring URL authentication process.
  • An invalid username or password was used to logon. If your library is using a username and password combination to allow access to ProQuest, make certain that the user attempting to access ProQuest has the correct username and password for your account.
  • An authentication cookie has expired or been deleted from the accessing web browser. Please make certain that the user's computer is not set to a security level or using any internet security tools which might be blocking the authentication cookies set by ProQuest during the authentication process.

If none of the above scenarios or suggestions seems to apply, please contact ProQuest Customer Service so that we may help you to resolve the problem.
