What is Error 1010?
How do I fix Error 1010?
I tried to go to ProQuest and I got a screen called Error 1010?
What happened?
What does this mean?
What should I do? (Library
Administrator Instructions)
What happened?
The following ProQuest error:"Error 1010: ProQuest was unable to give you
access because ProQuest could not recognize the web site you came from. "
will display when you attempt to access ProQuest and the link or URL has
specified to use the URL of the web page you came from (called a "referring
URL") for authentication to ProQuest. ProQuest was unable to obtain this URL or
did not recognize the URL you came from. This error is usually caused by
personal firewall software filtering out the information we use from your
organization to allow you access from home. This is a common error which occurs
when attempting to access ProQuest.
What does this mean?
If you are a student or library patron, this error is common and
should not alarm you. Most often, this error occurs because you are attempting
to access ProQuest from home or work or someplace other than your library,
campus, or institution. The Referring URL is the URL or address of the page that
you are linking from; it is often used to check where your computer is coming
from in order to provide access to resources like ProQuest. Sometimes, internet
security software can block or hide the web page you are coming from. If you
follow a bookmark or a saved link, you may also not even have a referring URL to
verify. Please check with your library reference desk, your institutional help
desk, or your offsite support services to inquire if there are instructions or
login information for connecting remotely to ProQuest. At many institutions, they
may be able to help you set up a connection to ProQuest through a proxy server,
through an alternative web page link, or through the use of an account name and
password.
What should I do?
If you believe you already have attempted to access ProQuest properly from
your library and you are receiving this error message and are unable to connect,
please review the following information.
Some Internet security software applications block the Referring URL and make
it impossible to use it for authentication. Please reference
configuring security
programs to work with ProQuest.
If you do not know whether or not you have any of the above software
packages, you should contact your library reference desk, your institutional
help desk, or your offsite support services for assistance.
If you believe you have properly configured you computer for access and have
accurate access information from your library and you are still unable to
connect, you may also wish to review the following:
- Check your computer and web browser settings. To ensure you will
be able to successfully access ProQuest products, please click on our Browser
Health Check.
Unfortunately, because every library is set up differently, ProQuest Support
cannot provide authentication assistance or information to end-users.
Library Administrator Instructions
If you are a Library Administrator, this error indicates a failure to
authenticate via the Referring URL authentication mechanism to ProQuest. While
the ProQuest web client normally attempts a number of methods to authenticate
the accessing browser, this error is normally caused by a link or bookmark or
URL which specifies that Referring URL authentication is the authentication
method to be used. This error can be caused by a number of scenarios, such as
the following common ones:
- A user is attempting to access ProQuest from an authorized link or a
page but their computer is using a security software package that blocks
Referring URL requests. This is very common. If your library uses Referring
URL to authenticate, please make certain that the user community knows that
some adjustments may be necessary to their security software configuration
when accessing ProQuest. Please reference
configuring security
programs to work with ProQuest.
- A user is attempting to access ProQuest from a bookmarked link or a page
which has copied the link from another library page. If your library uses
Referring URL to authenticate, please make certain that the user attempting
to access ProQuest from a page link that the library has set up as
authorized for ProQuest.
- Referring URL authentication has not been set up correctly for this link
or your network. Please make certain the link which is attempting to
access ProQuest is URL set up for authentication to your account. If you are
unsure how to do this, please contact
ProQuest
Customer Support for
assistance.
If none of the above scenarios or suggestions seems to apply, please contact
ProQuest
Technical Support so that we may help you to resolve the problem.
